A CT (Computed Tomography) scan uses X-rays and advanced computing to produce detailed cross-sectional images of the body. It is faster than MRI and excellent for chest, abdominal, vascular and bony structures. Private CT scan prices in the UK vary by body part, whether contrast dye is required, and the centre's location.
Private CT scan prices by body part (2026)
- CT Chest: £185–£320
- CT Sinuses / Head: £185–£295
- CT Abdomen: £250–£450
- CT Pelvis: £250–£400
- CT Abdomen & Pelvis: £350–£550
- CT Coronary Angiography (CTCA / Cardiac CT): £395–£700
- CT Colonoscopy: £400–£650
- CT with contrast: add £80–£150 to the above

CT vs MRI: which should I choose?
CT is generally faster (5–15 minutes), better for chest and bowel conditions, and more widely available. MRI takes longer (30–60 minutes) but produces superior soft tissue detail and uses no ionising radiation. Your GP or specialist will normally indicate which is appropriate, but for joint and spinal problems MRI is usually preferred. CT is the gold standard for chest, abdominal and vascular imaging.
CT scan radiation: is it safe?
CT uses ionising radiation (X-rays), which MRI does not. A CT chest delivers roughly the equivalent of 2 years of natural background radiation. For most adults, the clinical benefit of an accurate diagnosis far outweighs the small risk. CT is not used in pregnancy unless there is no safe alternative. Your radiologist will always weigh the risks and benefits before proceeding.
