About this scan
A mammogram uses low-dose X-rays to create detailed images of breast tissue and can show changes before a lump can be felt. In the UK, the NHS Breast Screening Programme invites women aged 50 to 71 for a mammogram every three years. A private mammogram is usually booked outside that programme, for example if you have symptoms, a family history or another reason to be checked sooner. Because it uses X-rays, a registered clinician has to refer you.
Equipment (including 3D tomosynthesis), availability and reporting times vary from centre to centre, and each centre's page shows what it offers. A consultant radiologist interprets the images and writes the report.

Your appointment
You'll stand at the mammography machine. A radiographer positions each breast on the platform and gently compresses it using a paddle.
Compression is necessary to spread the tissue and produce a clear image. It lasts only a few seconds and may feel uncomfortable but not painful.
Usually two views of each breast are taken (top-to-bottom and side-on). The whole appointment takes 20–30 minutes.
A consultant radiologist reviews your images and delivers a written report to your ScanBook portal within 48 hours.
Before your scan
Compare mammogram appointments at independent centres. You do not need a referral from your own GP, but this scan uses X-rays, so UK regulations require a referral from a registered clinician and the centre must confirm the scan is justified.
