When booking a private MRI, you might notice clinics advertising their scanner's strength, usually either 1.5T or 3T (Tesla). Tesla is the unit of measurement for magnetic field strength. A 3T scanner has a magnet twice as strong as a 1.5T scanner. But does double the strength mean double the quality? The answer depends entirely on what part of your body is being scanned.
When 3T is highly recommended
A stronger magnetic field produces a higher signal-to-noise ratio. This translates to sharper, more detailed images, or the ability to run the scan faster. 3T scanners are considered the gold standard for specific intricate areas:
Conditions that benefit most from 3T MRI:
- Prostate MRI (mpMRI) - to accurately stage and identify small lesions
- Neurological imaging (Brain and Spine) - for multiple sclerosis or small tumours
- Small joint imaging (Wrists, hands, ankles)
- Complex musculoskeletal cases (e.g., tiny labral tears in the hip or shoulder)
When 1.5T is perfectly adequate (or even better)
For the vast majority of routine scans, such as a standard knee injury, lower back pain (sciatica), or general abdominal scans, a 1.5T scanner is diagnostically excellent. In fact, 1.5T is the global workhorse of medical imaging. Furthermore, 1.5T is sometimes actually *preferred* over 3T if you have metallic implants (like a knee replacement), as the stronger 3T magnet can cause more image distortion (artefact) around the metal.
